Here’s a Bannock Pops full recipe — a fun twist on traditional bannock, made bite-sized and served on sticks (like cake pops). You can enjoy them plain or stuffed with savory or sweet fillings.
Bannock Pops Recipe
Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour (or whole wheat flour for a rustic flavor)
1 tbsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
2 tbsp sugar (optional, for sweet version)
2 tbsp butter or oil (softened)
¾ cup warm water or milk (add gradually, you may need a little more/less)
Oil for frying (if deep frying) or a little butter/oil for pan frying
(Optional fillings/toppings)
Cheese cubes, pepperoni, bacon bits, chocolate chips, jam, Nutella, etc.
Instructions:
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar (if using).
Add Fat
Cut in butter (or stir in oil) until crumbly.
Add Liquid
Slowly pour in warm water or milk, mixing until a soft dough forms. It should be slightly sticky but not too wet.
Knead Lightly
Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead gently for 1–2 minutes. Do not overwork.
Shape Pops
Pinch off small golf-ball sized pieces of dough.
If using fillings, flatten slightly, place filling in center, then pinch closed.
Roll into smooth balls.
Cook
Deep fry method: Heat oil to 350°F (175°C). Fry bannock balls until golden brown, about 2–3 minutes.
Pan fry method: Heat a skillet with a little butter/oil, cook balls over medium heat, turning often until browned and cooked through.
Baking method: Place on parchment-lined tray, brush with melted butter, bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15–18 minutes until golden.
Add Sticks
Insert wooden skewers or lollipop sticks into the warm bannock balls. (Do this while still warm so they hold firmly.)
Serve
Serve plain, dusted with cinnamon sugar, drizzled with honey, or dipped in sauces (cheese dip, marinara, or chocolate sauce depending on sweet/savory style).
