Here’s a simple, traditional-style bannock recipe you can make with basic pantry ingredients.
Traditional Bannock (Pan-Fried or Baked)
Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
1–2 tablespoons sugar (optional)
2 tablespoons butter or oil (plus extra for frying if pan-cooking)
¾–1 cup water or milk
Instructions
1️⃣ Mix the dry ingredients
In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar (if using).
2️⃣ Add fat
Cut in the butter (or mix in oil) until the mixture is crumbly.
3️⃣ Add liquid
Slowly stir in water or milk until a soft dough forms. Don’t overmix.
4️⃣ Shape
Turn onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat into a round disk about ¾–1 inch thick.
Cooking Methods
🔥 Pan-Fried (Traditional Camp Style)
Heat a lightly oiled skillet over medium-low heat.
Cook 8–10 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through.
Lower heat if it browns too quickly.
🔥 Baked
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
Place dough on a baking sheet and bake 20–25 minutes until golden.
Optional Add-Ins
Raisins or dried berries
Cheese and herbs
Honey brushed on top
Serve with butter, jam, or stew
