Here’s a simple, classic bannock recipe you can make at home:
Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour (or whole wheat, or a mix)
1 Tbsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
2 Tbsp butter, lard, or oil (optional for richness)
¾ cup water or milk (adjust as needed)
Instructions:
Mix dry ingredients: In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
Add fat (optional): Cut in butter or stir in oil until mixture is crumbly.
Add liquid: Stir in water or milk a little at a time until dough just comes together. (It should be soft but not sticky.)
Shape: Turn onto a floured surface and gently pat into a round disk about ¾–1 inch thick.
Cook:
Frypan method: Heat a lightly greased skillet over medium heat. Cook bannock 5–7 minutes per side until golden and cooked through.
Oven method: Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 20–25 minutes until golden.
