Hamburger and potato filled bannock pops

Posted on December 24, 2025

Here’s a Hamburger & Potato–Filled Bannock Pops recipe—crispy on the outside, savory inside, and fun to eat on a stick or as hand-held bites.

Bannock Pops (Hamburger & Potato Filled)

Makes: about 10–12 pops

Cook time: ~30 minutes

Ingredients

Bannock Dough

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 tsp baking powder

½ tsp salt

2 tbsp oil or melted butter

¾–1 cup water (add gradually)

Filling

½ lb (225 g) ground beef

1 medium potato, peeled and finely diced or shredded

¼ small onion, finely chopped (optional)

½ tsp salt

½ tsp pepper

½ tsp garlic powder

½ tsp paprika (optional)

For Cooking

Oil for frying or extra butter/oil for pan-frying

Wooden skewers or popsicle sticks (optional)

Instructions

1. Make the Filling

Cook the ground beef in a pan over medium heat until browned.

Add onion (if using) and cook 2–3 minutes.

Stir in potato, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.

Cook until potatoes are just tender (about 5–7 minutes).

Remove from heat and let cool slightly.

2. Make the Bannock Dough

In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.

Add oil/butter, then slowly mix in water until a soft dough forms.

Knead lightly (about 1 minute).

Cover and rest for 5–10 minutes.

3. Assemble the Pops

Divide dough into golf-ball–sized pieces.

Flatten each into a small circle.

Spoon 1–2 tbsp of filling into the center.

Fold dough around filling and pinch to seal.

Gently shape into a ball or oval.

Insert a skewer or stick if using (optional).

4. Cook

Pan-Fry Method (recommended):

Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.

Cook bannock pops, turning gently, until golden brown on all sides (8–10 minutes).

Ensure dough is fully cooked inside.

OR Bake:

Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 18–22 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden.

Serving Ideas

Serve with ketchup, gravy, or garlic sauce

Add cheese inside for extra flavor

Sprinkle with a little salt right after cooking

Tips

Dice potatoes very small so they cook evenly

Don’t overfill or they may burst

These freeze well after cooking—reheat in a pan or oven
