Here’s a classic fry bread recipe—crispy on the outside, soft and chewy inside. It’s perfect on its own, with honey, or as the base for tacos!
Traditional Fry Bread Recipe
Ingredients:
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 ½ cups warm water (more or less, as needed)
Oil or lard, for frying (vegetable or canola oil works well)
Instructions:
Mix dry ingredients:
In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
Add water:
Gradually add warm water to the dry ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms. You may not need all the water.
Knead:
Knead the dough lightly on a floured surface for about 2–3 minutes until smooth but not sticky.
Rest:
Cover the dough and let it rest for 30–60 minutes (optional, but improves texture).
Divide and shape:
Divide dough into 8–10 pieces. Roll or flatten each into a round about ¼-inch thick.
Heat oil:
In a deep skillet, heat 1–2 inches of oil over medium-high heat to 350–375°F (175–190°C).
Fry:
Carefully place one round into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown, about 1–2 minutes per side. Use tongs to flip.
Drain:
Remove and place on a paper towel–lined plate to drain excess oil.
Serving Ideas:
Sweet: Drizzle with honey, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.
Savory: Top with taco meat, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and sour cream for “Indian Tacos.”
