Irish soda bread

Posted on April 29, 2025

Of course! Here’s a classic Irish Soda Bread recipe — super simple and very traditional:

Ingredients:

4 cups (500g) all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1 ¾ cups (400ml) buttermilk

Optional add-ins:

2 tablespoons sugar (for a slightly sweet version)

½ cup raisins or currants

1 tablespoon caraway seeds

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

Mix the flour, baking soda, and salt together in a large bowl.

Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk.

Stir gently with your hand or a wooden spoon just until the dough comes together — don’t overmix.

Turn out onto a floured surface and knead lightly for about 30 seconds, just enough to form a rough ball.

Shape into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Cut a deep cross on the top with a sharp knife — this helps it bake evenly and “lets the fairies out,” according to Irish tradition!

Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Tips:

If you don’t have buttermilk, you can make a quick substitute: 1 ¾ cups milk + 1 ½ tablespoons lemon juice or white vinegar. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes.

Best eaten fresh and warm with butter!
